Traditional Sport of India

Balit Xilguti / Lukua / Kichu Kichu Tambulam

Kichu Kichu Tambulam is a traditional Assamese play activity in which a small object such as a stick or tambulam item is hidden and searched for within a limited time. In this blindfolded variation, the game becomes a lively test of memory, touch, spatial awareness, and quick judgment.

Region

Assam

Also Known As

Kichu Kichu Tambulam, Kichu Kichu Thambalam

Type

Traditional blindfolded search game

About the Game

This is a special traditional game in which a small object is hidden in sand or within a defined play area, and a player must locate it before the time runs out. In some versions, the search lasts only as long as a short song or chant, making the challenge quick, playful, and exciting.

The blindfolded version adds extra difficulty by removing sight and making the player depend on touch, memory, sound, and careful movement.

Introduction

The game known as “Finding the Tambulam Blindfolded” is an extended form of the traditional Kichu Kichu Tambulam game. It is designed as a fun and challenging activity that combines searching, guessing, and sensory awareness.

Traditional tambulam items may include betel leaves and betel nuts, but in modern play, small substitutes such as coins, toy pieces, or sticks may also be used.

The Setup

Items Needed

  • Tambulam items such as betel leaves and nuts, or small substitutes like coins, toys, or sticks.
  • A blindfold for the searching player.

Play Area

A large, open, and safe area is best for the game. The items may be hidden under soft soil, sand, or placed around a marked space.

The Play

The objective is for the blindfolded player to find as many hidden tambulam items as possible within the given time.

  1. Hide the tambulam items in sand, soil, or around the designated play area.
  2. If using several items, scatter them in a circle or random pattern.
  3. Blindfold one player at a time.
  4. The blindfolded player searches using touch, memory, and listening cues.
  5. The round ends when the time limit is over or all target items are found.

Game in Action

Traditional Kichu Kichu Tambulam game
The game becomes more exciting when players rely only on touch, memory, and surrounding sounds.

Rules

  • The game begins with one player being blindfolded.
  • Other players may chant “Kichu Kichu Tambulam” or create sound cues, depending on the chosen style of play.
  • The blindfolded player must locate and collect the hidden items using only their hands.
  • Other players may give verbal clues, but they cannot physically assist.
  • The player must stay within the designated play area.

Winning

The winner may be decided in different ways depending on the format of the game.

  • The player who collects the most correct tambulam items wins.
  • The player who finds all items in the shortest time may win.
  • A player may also win by locating one specific target item before others do.

Skills Required

Personal Skills

  • Memory to recall possible item locations.
  • Touch sensitivity to distinguish the target items.
  • Spatial awareness while moving without sight.
  • Body coordination and careful balance.

Interactive Skills

  • Listening ability to follow sound-based hints.
  • Quick judgment under playful pressure.
  • Teamwork when clues are part of the game.
  • Patience and concentration during the search.

Cultural Significance

Kichu Kichu Tambulam reflects the playful, communal spirit of Assamese traditional games, where simple objects and group participation create a joyful shared experience.

The blindfolded version adds surprise, laughter, and excitement, making it especially suitable for festivals, family gatherings, and social celebrations across age groups.
