Rettu

Introduction

A unique game played with a wooden ball and a wooden strip instead of the typical gilli (stick) and danda (bat). This variation is a fascinating traditional game with regional adaptations in South India and other parts of India. Here’s how such a game might be played

Equipment Needed

  1. Wooden Ball:

A small, smooth wooden ball about the size of a table tennis ball.

  1. Wooden Strip:

A flat, narrow piece of wood, similar to a bat, used to hit the ball.

Objective:

To hit the wooden ball as far as possible, score runs, or achieve specific targets depending on the variation of the game.

Rules

  1. Setting Up

Mark a playing area, usually an open field or ground.

Draw a small circle or a base where the hitter stands.

  1. Gameplay

Single Player Variation:

  1. The player places the wooden ball in the circle.
  2. Place the wooden strip under the ball in slanting position, to strike it and send the ball with force, as far as possible. Like in the game of gilli danda they strike the gilli, but without using the strip.
  3. Points or “runs” are scored based on how far the ball travels.

Multi-Player Variation:

  1. Teams are formed, with one team taking turns hitting the ball while the other team fields.
  2. The fielding team tries to catch the ball or return it to the circle quickly to dismiss the batter.
  3. If the batter is caught, they are “out,” and the next player takes their turn.
  4. Scoring:

Distance-based: Points are awarded based on predefined zones (e.g., 1 point for 10 feet, 2 points for 20 feet).

Run-based: The batter runs to a marked spot and back while the fielding team retrieves the ball.

  1. Winning the Game:

The player or team with the most points or runs at the end of a set number of rounds wins.

Skills Required:

Coordination: Proper aim and timing to hit the ball effectively.

Strength: To strike the ball far.

Strategy: Smart placement of the ball to avoid fielders.
