Rettu

Traditional Sport of India

Rettu

Rettu is a traditional striking game played with a wooden ball and a flat wooden strip instead of the more familiar gilli and danda. It is a simple yet skill-based outdoor game that emphasizes timing, aim, distance, and quick play.

Type

Traditional bat-and-ball style folk game

Main Equipment

Wooden ball and wooden strip

Main Skills

Timing, coordination, strength, and strategy

Introduction

Rettu is a distinctive traditional game in which players strike a small wooden ball using a flat wooden strip. Unlike gilli-danda, this version uses a ball instead of a short pointed stick, giving the game its own style and rhythm.

It appears to have been played in open grounds and village spaces, where simple handmade equipment was enough to create a lively and competitive game.

Equipment Needed

Wooden Ball

A small, smooth wooden ball, roughly about the size of a table tennis ball.

Wooden Strip

A flat, narrow piece of wood used to strike the ball.

Playing Area

An open field or ground with enough space for striking and fielding.

Objective

The main objective of Rettu is to hit the wooden ball as far as possible and score points or runs, depending on the version being played.

In team play, the batting side tries to score while the fielding side tries to stop the ball and dismiss the hitter.

The Setup

  1. Select an open playing area.
  2. Mark a small circle or base where the hitter stands.
  3. Keep the wooden ball and wooden strip ready at the striking point.

Rules

Single-Player Variation

  1. The player places the wooden ball inside the marked circle.
  2. The wooden strip is placed under or beside the ball in a slanting position.
  3. The player strikes the ball with force to send it as far as possible.
  4. Points are awarded based on the distance the ball travels.

Multi-Player Variation

  1. Players form teams, with one side batting and the other fielding.
  2. The batter strikes the wooden ball from the marked area.
  3. The fielding team tries to catch the ball or return it quickly to the base.
  4. If the batter is caught out, the next player takes a turn.

Scoring

Distance-Based Method

Points may be given according to how far the ball travels, with different ground zones carrying different values.

Run-Based Method

In some variations, the batter runs to a marked point and back while the fielders retrieve the ball and return it.

Winning the Game

The player or team with the highest number of points or runs after the decided number of turns or rounds wins.

Skills Required

  • Coordination for striking the ball accurately.
  • Timing to make clean and effective contact.
  • Strength to send the ball over a long distance.
  • Strategy to place the ball away from fielders.

Educational Value

Rettu helps develop hand-eye coordination, focus, and judgment of distance. In team settings, it also encourages cooperation, quick response, and healthy competition.

Cultural Significance

Rettu reflects the resourceful spirit of traditional Indian play, where local materials such as wood were turned into meaningful sporting tools. It belongs to the broad family of indigenous striking games that developed in villages and open community spaces.

Its simplicity makes it easy to revive in schools, playgrounds, and folk sports demonstrations today.
