Gutte is a traditional hand-skill game played with five small stones or cloth seed bags. It is known by different regional names such as Kuzhangal and Anchankal, and it is played through a sequence of catching, picking, and exchange-based steps.

Also Known As

Batti, Satpasanaka, Kuzhangal, Anchankal

Type

Traditional hand-skill game

Players

Two or more players, or individual play

About the Game

Gutte is a traditional game usually played by children on a clean flat surface using five similar stones or small triangular cloth bags filled with seeds, rice, or sand. The game tests timing, concentration, dexterity, and rhythm.

One stone is tossed into the air while the player quickly picks up one or more stones from the ground and catches the tossed stone with the same hand. The goal is to complete all required levels in the correct sequence.

Traditional Play

Traditional Gutte game with stones
Gutte is played using small stones or cloth bags on a flat surface.

Origin and Names

Gutte is known by different names in different regions. In Tamil Nadu, similar versions are called Kuzhangal or Anchankal, while related forms are also known in other countries under different local names.

The game belongs to a wide family of traditional toss-and-catch hand games that rely on simple objects and skill rather than equipment or special grounds.

The Setup

Participants

Two or more players, though it can also be played alone.

Equipment

Five small stones or triangular cloth bags filled with seeds, rice, or sand.

Surface

A clean, flat floor or ground surface.

Objective

Complete as many full sets of eight steps as possible.

Game Pieces

Gutte cloth bags or stones
Players may use stones or small filled cloth bags as game pieces.

Alternative Materials

Alternative Gutte materials
Different local materials can be used as long as they are small and easy to catch.

The Play

  1. Players decide the order of play.
  2. Each player takes a turn individually.
  3. The player begins by throwing all five stones onto the ground.
  4. One stone is tossed into the air, one stone is picked up from the ground, and the tossed stone is caught with the same hand.
  5. This continues until all stones are collected in the required pattern for that level.

Sequence of Steps

  1. Pick up one stone at a time while tossing and catching one stone.
  2. Repeat the process, but pick up two stones at a time.
  3. Then pick up three stones and one stone, in either order.
  4. Next, sweep up all four stones in one motion.
  5. After that, perform the exchange step by holding two stones and replacing one ground stone at a time using one hand.
  6. Continue with the catching and hand-separation steps as required in the advanced stage.
  7. In the final step, the opponent selects the tossed stone, and the player must sweep up the remaining stones and complete the catch.
  8. When all the steps are completed successfully, the player scores a point and starts again from the beginning sequence.

Turn Ends When

  • The tossed stone is not caught in time.
  • The player touches or disturbs stones that were not meant to be picked up.
  • The required step is not completed correctly.

On the next turn, the player resumes from the step where the mistake happened.

Winning

The winner is the player who completes the full set of eight steps the greatest number of times.
