Traditional Sport of India
Chalak Chalanu is a lively traditional outdoor circle game from Gujarat. It is built around quick movement, shifting positions, and the challenge of securing a safe home before the chaser does.

Traditional outdoor circle game
6 to 10 players
Chalak Chalanu is played in a circle with marked spots that act as homes. All players except one stand at these homes, while one player begins in the center as the chaser.
The game depends on alertness, speed, and timing. When players begin switching places, the chaser tries to grab one of the empty homes, leaving another player without a spot.
A group of players, usually 6 to 10.
An open space with enough room to form a circle.
Marked spots arranged in a circle, one fewer than the number of players.
One player stands in the center of the circle.
The chaser approaches any player and asks which home they should go to. In Gujarati, the line is often spoken as: Chalak, Chalanu kaya ghare Bhanu?
This line is described as asking, in a playful way, which home the speaker should go to for food. The chosen player then names another player’s home in the circle.
The chaser uses the confusion of the moving players to occupy any vacant home. The aim is not just to chase a person, but to claim a safe place in the circle.
If the chaser manages to take one of the homes, the player left without a place becomes the next chaser. This keeps the game moving quickly and gives many players a turn in the center.
If the chaser is unable to occupy any home, the same player remains the chaser for the next round. The game continues until the players decide to stop.
Chalak Chalanu usually does not have a fixed final winner. It is mainly played for fun, speed, alertness, and group enjoyment.
Chalak Chalanu reflects the playful spirit of traditional Gujarati group games, where simple space markings and spoken lines are enough to create an energetic social activity.
Like many folk games, it encourages children to play together outdoors while building movement, social interaction, and presence of mind.
