Chalak chalanu

From Gujarat

The game ‘Chalak Chalanu’, often played in Gujarat as a lively outdoor game. The goal of the game is for the chaser to occupy a ‘home’ (a spot in the circle) while the other players try to switch spots and avoid being caught without a home.

The Setup

A group of players; 6–10 is ideal. An open space with a clear ground.

Markings or predefined spots (homes) in a circle for all players except one.

Players stand in a circle, with each person having a ‘home’ (a spot on the ground).

One player is chosen as the chaser and stands in the center of the circle.

The Play

Starting the Game

The chaser approaches any player in the circle and asks, ‘At which home?’

In Gujarati the rhyme is …. Chalak, Chalanu kaya ghare Bhanu? Meaning, at which home should I go to get food?

The chosen player must name any other players’ ‘home’ in the

circle.

Switching Spots

As soon as the chosen player names a home, the chaser must run toward it.

At the same time, all other players (except the chaser) quickly switch spots, trying to occupy a new home.

Chaser’s Role

The chaser uses this moment of chaos to run and occupy one of the vacant homes.

If the Chaser succeeds

If the chaser successfully takes a home, the player left without a home becomes the new chaser.

If the Chaser fails

The same chaser continues for the next round until they manage to secure a home.

Winning

The game doesn’t have a defined winner but continues until the players decide to stop. It’s more about having fun and staying alert!

Strategies for Winning

Stay alert: Keep an eye on vacant homes and be quick to move.

Be tricky: As the chaser, try to anticipate which players might switch spots and act swiftly.

Coordination: Players can strategically confuse the chaser by swapping homes unpredictably.

This game is an excellent way to build agility, quick thinking, and teamwork while having a lot of fun!
